The Ghosts of Block Island

My summer break has just begun and we embarked on a journey across a small town called Block Island, off the coast of Rhode Island in the USA. I was looking forward to the journey to this small town to experience the slow life I had heard about in tales. Apparently time slows down so much here that cars feel entirely out of place, next to the fleet of mopeds and bicycles. The slow down was an enjoyable experience but the town had another reputation too.
Half way into the day, I was standing at a ghost hotspot shivering to a sudden dip in temperature. The EMF recording instrument moved rapidly and the thermometer had a sharp 20 degree plunge from normal. This town had a haunted past and was home to over 20 ghost hotspots.
After a day of frolicking at the beach with my family in early 2025, we decided to embark on an evening ghost tour hosted by a local storyteller who knew every dark corner of the island’s history.
Our guide took out a thermometer and placed it in two different areas, one being a “hotspot” and the other being a normal area. The ghost hotspot was significantly colder than that of the regular area, which was mind-boggling as the spots were less than 30 feet away from each other!
As the chill ran down my spine, I realized that ghosts were not simply a myth. They seemed real and all around us in the moment. Standing just a small distance from the hotspot and witnessing the scientific proof that the thermometer was able to give us, made by my younger brother cling tighter to my arm. The group of around 20 people including my family, who were originally skeptical, had become a group of terrified individuals clinging to each other as we roamed around ghost territory.
The same colorful buildings that I viewed during the day had suddenly turned into the eerie abodes of ghosts! I remember specifically seeing an ice cream shop that during the day was adorable, with its colorful signs and clown-themed décor. Later in the night, it has transformed into a playground for the ghosts of people who’d been buried there.
The first tale that the evening began revolved around a historic island church, where voices of children who once resided, could still be heard. I was told to listen carefully and I did hear faint laughter of children but had brushed it off as my imagination. As the stories got wilder, the dark route we walked through became terrifyingly scary.
By the time the guide took us to another haunted house and narrated the story of a family whose puppy was killed when they provoked the ghosts begging them to stop haunting their house, I was feeling the drop in temperature again. It was both exciting, terrifying and refreshing to hear and experience the local tales, especially as it allowed me to wonder, to not know and to come up with my own conclusions. Before I knew it, my mind was racing with thoughts, emotions and theories about the unknown.
